Mes lieux préférés pour Hanami V.2 • My favorite Hanami spots V.2015【Tôkyô】

Voyage au Japon > Matsuris Travel in Japan > Matsuri
Je vous partage ces instantanés de bonheur pur~ Tokyo and its splendid spring dress sakura ✿(•͈⌔•͈⑅)♡ Cherry blossoms this year are even better thanks to the blue sky! So I visited even more places! I will share these snapshots of pure happiness~

Chiyoda-ku: ChidorigafuchiKitanomaru park, Yasukuni, National TheaterDiet, Nihonbashi
Minato-ku: Tokyo Midtown, Zôjô-jiOdaiba park
Shinjuku-ku: Shinjuku gyôen
Shibuya-ku: Yoyogi park
Taitô-ku: Ueno park

Odaiba park

March, 15th: While, in Kobe, I have just seen snow fall Kobe, in Tokyo winter yields to mild climate and first sakura types start blooming by surprise!

Zôjô-ji

March, 22th: This is it, the real beginning of blossoming!

Nihonbashi

Ueno park

25 mars : Swan boat sur l’étang Shinobazu, pédalo romantique au calme de la foule de touristes March, 25th: Swan boat on the Shinobazu pond, romantic paddleboat making you feel in a quiet place, far from the crowd of tourists.

Chidorigafuchi

March, 28th: The full bloom is near! My favorite spot ever: Chidorigafuchi, the most beautiful walk in the heart of Tokyo, along the Imperial Palace.
The illuminations of the walk at dusk are wonderful!
Boat ride, sliding on the water, under the old cherry trees, with the Tower of Tokyo on the horizon, the ultimate romance! Atmosphere of quiet wonder, a natural happiness as one can feel only in Japan!
In fact, this is also my usual running course. Thus I show you how it was in February, before blossoming so that you can compare. Living in this neighborhood is an everyday pleasure!

National Theater

The most spectacular cherry trees that I have ever seen are located in the garden of the National Theater *o* I was passing by through (electric!) Chiyoda bike and it really motivated me to park on!

Diet Library

The building of the Diet (parliament of Japan) is completely surrounded by sakura. My recommendation: start here and go up by the National Theatre and then continue on Chidorigafuchi and Kitanomaru parks up till Yasukuni!

Yasukuni jinja

The sanctuary is home to many sakura. But before getting there, many booths selling delicious specialties litter the path from the torii. The sakura matsuri organized there also offers outdoor concerts.

Yoyogi park

J’ai de bons souvenirs de jeunesse de ce spot ^o^ The place to sit under the cherry trees and drink with friends like never before. I have fond youngster memories of this spot ^o^

Like the Ueno Park, this place is known for its many cherry trees, thus it is overcrowded. But unlike the Yoyogi Park, here alcohol is prohibited; all thermos are even controlled at the entrance.
My recommendation: do one’s gourmet shopping at Takashimaya food show, then come and picnic. At the food show, one can even find the freshly cut Baumkuchen from meister Karl Jucheim!!

Tokyo Midtown

To take advantage of these ideal conditions, Tokyo Midtown is a gorgeous place to look at, wonderful to walk through! The curve sakura dōri is beautiful. And, to my mind, the Hinokicho park is much gorgeous than large Shinjuku or Yoyogi parks, making it my favorite of the year.
My recommendation: do one’s gourmet shopping at Midtown plaza, then come and picnic. Dishes and pastry just cooked, tasted quietly under the blue sky. I love Tokyo!!

Kitanomaru park

Another place where I love to picnic in a friendly atmosphere. The entrance through Nippon Budokan is sumptuous. This is my must, the place where I come back every day to see the flowers at all blooming stages.
The best: at the edge of the park, walk along the top of the wall overlooking Chidorigafuchi! Another way to enjoy the beautiful cherry trees in the discretion of a path that is surprisingly little used. Be careful not to crush the roots of trees, it is important to take care of these sakura!

My insta day #10 – Jingu Gaien Fireworks ~

A Hanabi viewed comfortably on chairs or onto the grass, with spots located in the big Jingu stadium in the heart of Tôkyô. Fireworks especially designed for charity to sustain the reconstruction of Japan after the Tôhoku disaster. All with performances of J-pop artists (including Shokotan!!) going along the fall of the night. At first, some bad odds over the event because of a sudden downpour (seems that these typhons never end O_o), but the reward was a gorgeous rainbow just before the fireworks. I enjoyed the « Wabi corner » to introduce Japanese tradition over hanabi, with yellow and orange colors. In total, 2 hours of live performances then 1 hour of fireworks, concluded with a project mapping spectacle on a the Jingu Art Museum.

Kanda matsuri at Kanda myôjin

kanda-matsuri-2013-05
One of the three largest Shinto matsuri has occured this week-end: Kanda Matsuri! While Saturday was rainy for shinkosai, this Sunday was just like a summer day, beautiful and very warm, perfect for the parade of mikoshi! Kanda Matsuri is normally held once every two years, but because of the earthquake of March 11th, the festival could not take place recently. This is the first time in four years that the matsuri returns, and what enthusiasm!

I have gone to the great shrine Kanda myôjin, where hundreds of mikoshi are brought. Every one of these mikoshi were as splendid as terribly heavy, courageously borne by inhabitants of the Kanda area, visibly proud and happy to participate in the fun! Priests, participants, visitors, everyone had a smile. The atmosphere was joy mingled with the smell of tasty food and taiko music.

The parade took place over 30km, from Ochanomizu to Nihonbashi through Akihabara. It was really impressive, and everyone pitched in! There was a mikoshi carried only by women, and another by small children, which was so cute! (even the dogs wore special happi for this event ^o^)

My favorite o-hanami spots at Tôkyô: Cherry blossoms in full bloom at Chiyoda + Ueno

Chiyoda

When I go to Tokyo, I love living at Chiyoda. I like this ward, it’s the center of the city, close to everything, and above all it’s full of beautiful gardens all around the Imperial palace! As there are many paths bordered with cherry trees, the district becomes lovely and very lively.

This year, cherry blossoms bloomed early. Almost exactly at the moment I arrived in Japan. It was moving for me to start my stay by o-hanami, this celebration to spring and to nature that is so important and unique to Japanese people.

So I followed the blooming from the beginning, with a great attention to flowers that I never had in France. Here are some photos of my favorite spots during one week, at Chiyoda of course, and also some other spots.

Chidorigafuchi and gardens of Imperial palace

Monday 18th March: sakura started to bloom. Just before, the temperature reached 26°C! But this day, there was a very strong wind, so the flowers were hiding itself. I never followed the weather information with so much anxiety for trees ^^

Thursday 21th: the day before full bloom. The city was already testing the night lighting. Chidorigafuchi at sunset, seen from Kitanomaru kôen, was so gorgeous.

Friday 22th: Full bloom at total night. The cherry trees were marvelous, each sakura looked like shiny pink stars! And also it smelled so good, the perfume of sakura was delicate and sweet♡

Saturday 23th: the first weekend following the full bloom. Every places were very crowded, we could feel everybody enjoying what they saw.

I’m definitely a Chiyoda-ku sakura supporter ^_^

Thursday 28th: The sakura petals started to fall at the Higashi gyôen of Imperial palace. Intense and ephemeral beauty…

Friday 29th: Each year, a cherry tree has to be cut down. With this wood, chopsticks, bowls, straps, and more goods are made and sold this day only. « Made from a tree that takes 100 years to grow, goods that can be used 100 years ». These unique and limited goods are called « Symbol of Chiyoda » and the money collected helps to preserve the park of cherry tree in the city. Do I have to say that I bought a lot of these goods? ^^

Yasukuni jinja

Monday: only one tree started to bloom. The shrine was so quiet.

Friday: the night of full bloom. A great matsuri took place around the shrine, with lots of booths of tasty food!

Sotobori-dôri

Less crowded. It was nice to walk along this flowery path.

Ueno

I was amazed that Ueno park could be so different from this summer. Cherry blossoms can profoundly change landscapes!

O-hanami is really a warm moment to share with everybody, at any age, and any culture. It makes me love in a new way the transition from winter to spring. I hope I could celebrate o-hanami again in the future!

To go further

How to get there (by Tôkyô metro)

  • Chidorigafuchi, gardens of Imperial palace and Yasukuni jinja
    • → Kudanshita station
  • Sotobori-dôri
    • → Ichigaya or Iidabashi station
  • Ueno kôen
    • → Yushima or Ueno station
